Ronan is our newest yogi. We asked him a few questions about his experience of Iyengar Yoga.
What brought you to Iyengar Yoga ?
My father who has practiced yoga on and off since the 70s recommended Iyengar as an accessible introduction to yoga.
What were your initial thoughts or hesitations about practing yoga ?
Not understanding the names of poses gave me the sense of not knowing what I was doing (which still hasn't left me !) Before I tried yoga I thought classes would be more spiritually focussed rather than physical, which I would not have been so keen on,
How has Iyengar Yoga imnpacted your physical health and wellbeing and what has been the greatest benefit ?
The release of physical and mental tension in practicing yoga at the end of a working day feels really beneficial to me.
How does Iyengar Yoga compare to other types of yoga or exercise that you have participated in ?
I tried Asthanga yoga a couple of timnes. It felt like I didn't have enough tinme to get the poses right as a beginner which was a little frustrating. I left with sore knees a few times. Iyengar yoga complements other exercises that I do - cycling and the gym.
Have you noticed any shifts in how men's participation in yoga is perceived ?
It seems a lot more common to hear of men taking up yoga then it was 15 years ago.,
What would you say to other men considering taking up yoga ?
Do it !! It is not a replacement for other types of exercise but it complements them . I would definitely recommend it if you have a desk based job.
